Joanna Szupinska-Myers is Senior Curator at the California Museum of Photography (CMP) at the University of California, Riverside (UCR). Previously she held the positions of Marjorie Susman Curatorial Fellow at the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago (MCA Chicago), Curatorial Assistant to Jens Hoffmann, and Gallery Director at Susanne Vielmetter Los Angeles Projects.
As a curator and writer, she is immersed in contemporary art, the history of exhibitions, and the nature of collections. She has curated and co-curated group exhibitions Mundos Alternos: Art and Science Fiction in the Americas (2017-18; traveled 2019), Reproduction, Reproduction (2015-16), and Trouble with the Index (2014) at the CMP, and Skyscraper: Art and Architecture Against Gravity (2012), and First 50 (2012) at MCA Chicago. She has curated solo presentations of work by Marie Bovo, Phil Chang, Zoe Crosher, Allan deSouza, Gordon Matta-Clark, Cauleen Smith, and Penelope Umbrico, among others. Her essays have been published in English, Polish, German, French, Italian, and Mandarin Chinese.
Szupinska-Myers is currently a PhD student at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), where she earned her MA in Art History. She also earned an MA in Curatorial Practice at the California College of the Arts, San Francisco (CCA), and a BA in Art at UCLA.
